RF Architectures for Cyber-Physical Systems

292 Seiten, Dissertation Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen (2016), Hardcover, A5

Zusammenfassung / Abstract

After an introduction to cyber-physical systems and fundamentals of digital wireless systems, an overview of requirements and suitable standards for the named application is given. It is emphasized why multistandard and multiband support is required, and why on the other hand complexity and power consumption have to be kept low. Different radio architectures and their benefits and drawbacks are presented and compared, as well as digital filters for fractional sample rate conversion.

The LPRF transceiver, a dual-band, multistandard, low-complexity IC for narrowband applications, in particular for cyber-physical systems and the internet of things including Bluetooth, IEEE 802.15.4 LR-WPAN and 802.15.4g SUN, is described from a system point of view. It employs on-chip digital signal processing, a sliding-IF architecture to support two bands (800–960 MHz and 2.4 GHz) with a single PLL, a low-IF receiver and a direct-polar transmitter with output power up to 24.7 dBm, manufactured in a 130 nm CMOS technology. The circuit design of the transmitter with current-mode-D power amplifiers is described in more detail, and measurement results are provided. It is the first transceiver reported so far supporting both bands of interest with integrated high-power power amplifiers.
