Zusammenfassung / Abstract

Inspired by the natural occurring desmosine, cross-linker molecules based on a pyridine core structure were synthesized with different numbers, lengths and types of connecting arms. Their acrylic end groups formed covalent links by reacting in Michael-type additions with nucleophilic atoms on water-soluble polymer chains which yielded biocompatible hydrogels. The cross-linkers could be improved by raising their hydrophilicity for the gelation process and increasing their stability in the resulting gels. This was achieved by using oligo ethylene glycol based spacers instead of alkyl chains as well as amide- in stead of ester-connections inside the molecules. Furthermore, a cationic charge on the pyridine core led to higher swelling ratios and more flexible gels. Thus, the macroscopic properties of the hydrogels could be adjusted by the molecular structure of the cross-linkers. The resulting materials showed similar mechanical behavior as human skin and opened up interesting areas of applications.
