Development of a novel multiaxial warp knitting based technology for production of 3D near net shape preforms

148 Seiten, Dissertation Technische Universität Dresden (2016), Softcover, A5

Zusammenfassung / Abstract

Composites have now revolutionized most industries, like aerospace, maritime, electrical, transportation, and have proved to be a worthy alternative to other traditional materials. However, a breakthrough for large scale usage of complex Fiber Reinforced Composites (FRC) components is only possible, if the production costs can be significantly reduced and material efficiency is increased. In this regard, one of the major fundamental requirements is the development of a novel large scale oriented direct preforming technology based on highly productive multiaxial warp knitting for the production of textile reinforcements in the near netshape of final component. This dissertation presents the development of a flexible textile process chain based on the concept of variable warp yarn delivery and differential doffing, for producing both open grid and closed surface near net shape Three Dimensional (3D) preforms with load and form conforming fiber orientations, more so for structures with complex geometries. The possibility of having a unified production of both open grid and closed surface preforms without hindering the basic machine functionality has hitherto not been realized with any other existing known large scale technologies. The novel textile near net shape 3D preforms make themselves suitable for their application as reinforced components in complex spatial composites with a mineral or a plastic based matrix, wooden composites and elastomers.
