Jonas Mangold Preliminary Design of Transport Aircraft with Dual Energy Carriers
257 Seiten, Dissertation Universität Stuttgart (2026), Hardcover, A5
Hybrid-electric propulsion architectures combine complementary energy carriers, such as sustainable aviation fuels, liquid hydrogen, and batteries. Their integration creates interactions between propulsion sizing, operational requirements, and energy supply during aircraft turnaround. This dissertation develops an integrated preliminary design methodology for transport aircraft with dual energy carriers. Analytical and numerical methods are combined within an overall aircraft design framework to account for propulsion failures, energy management strategies, operational regulations, and turnaround processes. Energy supply concepts such as battery charging and liquid hydrogen refueling are assessed using dedicated models.
The results demonstrate that propulsion sizing depends on hybridization, component characteristics, and failure conditions. Operational regulations can substantially increase battery capacity requirements and lead to aircraft resizing. Liquid hydrogen refueling can achieve competitive turnaround times with suitable infrastructure and handling concepts, whereas energy carrier swapping faces standardization and maintenance constraints. Fast battery charging introduces additional constraints on battery and aircraft sizing. Charging heat loads can exceed those generated by battery discharge during flight.
