Assessment of Therapeutic, Scatter, and Imaging Doses in Radiation Oncology and Implications for Cancer Risk

154 Seiten, Dissertation Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Zürich (2012), Hardcover, A5

Zusammenfassung / Abstract

In this thesis, the assessment of therapeutic, stray, and imaging doses for a typical treatment course of a patient in radiation oncology is presented and the implications for cancer risk are discussed.

Contemporary radiotherapy treatment techniques increase the amount of stray dose and therefore the integral dose of a patient. The dose from secondary neutrons and from imaging modalities are further possible unwanted dose contributions, which are believed to increase radiation-induced malignancies.

Measurements of all dose contributions in a typical treatment of a patient in radiation oncology were combined to evaluate whole-body dose distributions for image-guided radiotherapy. This work provides a comprehensive basis for the modelling of radiation related cancer risk in modern radiation oncology.
