Bernhard Grotz
Coupling Single NV Centers to External Degrees of Freedom

200 Seiten, Dissertation Universität Stuttgart (2013), Hardcover, A5

Zusammenfassung / Abstract

Robustness to environmental effects in combation with optical clarity makes diamond a suitable host material for solid state emitters like nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers. These single photon sources can act as probes for physical effects on the nanoscale. When positioned close to the diamond surface, the local environment can be modified and coupling to external degrees of freedom becomes possible.

The NV charge state is shown to be chemically controllable by a hydrogen surface termination. This is expanded to a full electrical control by a solution-gated field effect transistor.

NV centers can sense small magnetic fields. The detection of few electron spins and magnetic dipole-dipole coupling between a single NV and a surface spin is demonstrated.

Nanodiamonds attach to silver nanowires. By optical excitation of embedded NV centers, surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are generated, which exhibit wave-particle duality.

Envisioned experiments require a switch from NV to organic dye molecules. Excitation and outcoupling of SPPs with narrow linewidths and the transfer of coherent photons is observed.
