As RFID systems are used in a wide area of applications, there is a high potential for improvement and optimization, considering the different transmission scenarios. This work presents a receiver structure for an RFID system based on the EPCglobal operating in a small scale fading channel. The general performance of this system in combination with an analysis of the transmission behavior is given. Based on this behavior several modifications and extensions are presented to further increase the system performance. Furthermore, different channel conditions are taken into consideration in order to evaluate when the usage of the presented modifications and extensions is worthwhile. Additionally, two novel algorithms are introduced which use the data provided by the EPCglobal for a reliable error detection. These algorithms are compared to each other and to a commonly used CRC-code. Furthermore, it is suggested in which scenarios it is worthwhile to use these algorithms.
