Microfluidics as a method to follow dynamic assembly of colloidal systems

170 Seiten, Dissertation Universität Bayreuth (2015), Softcover, A5

Zusammenfassung / Abstract

Microfluidics has become a powerful and versatile technique for fundamental research in the area of nanoparticle synthesis and assembly, since it gives precise control over diffusion-based mixing processes on the micron-scale, and it is therefore very well suited for the investigation of self-assembly and growth processes of nanomaterials with down to microsecond temporal resolution. Similar to the progress in microfluidic technology, the quality and brilliance of X-ray scattering instruments and synchrotron sources have evolved considerably and due to the possibility to focus X-ray beams down to a few microns in diameter, the combination of both methods enables research which has not been possible so far. This includes research on nucleation of nanoparticles, assembly of amphiphilic molecules or orientation of particles.

In this study, microfluidic devices for the preparation of supramolecular assemblies have been combined with analytical methods including X-ray scattering and fluorescence microscopy. With this combination, it is possible to gain new insights into the formation, growth, and mechanism of selfassembly of nano-scale materials. This work focuses on the investigation of the self-assembly of colloidal systems.
