Biomimetic poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS) based scaffolds for cardiac tissue engineering

215 Seiten, Dissertation Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (2015), Softcover, A5

Zusammenfassung / Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction remain among the leading causes of death worldwide. Cardiac tissue engineering (CTE) is a potential treatment for myocardial infarction. Specific and complex mechanisms govern the reactions that occur at the interface between the biomaterial and the cellular environment. These interactions are influenced by surface energy, chemical composition, stiffness, roughness and topography of the biomaterial in contact with cells.

This study focused on investigating novel biomaterials as CTE patches. The materials investigated were neat poly (glycerol sebacate) (PGS), PGS/poly("-caprolactone) (PCL) and PGS/poly(butylene succinate-butylene dilinoleate)(PBS-DLA) blends. The selected materials and their blends were assessed in terms of microstructural, mechanical and thermal properties, in-vitro degradation as well as cell response in cell culture studies in order to determine their suitability as scaffold materials for CTE.
