Renate Daschner
Addressable Rubidium vapor cells for optical and electrical read-out of Rydberg excitations

195 Seiten, Dissertation Universität Stuttgart (2015), Softcover, A5

Zusammenfassung / Abstract

The possible usage of Rydberg atoms for quantum information processing in ultracold experiments has led to an increased interest in Rydberg atoms inside the community over the last years. In this work Rydberg atoms are observed in room-temperature vapor cells, which leads to a significant simplification of the experimental setup compared to ultracold experiments. However it needs special requirements concerning the materials and fabrication of such vapor cells. In the scope of this thesis we investigated the characteristic properties of anodically bonded vapor cells for Rydberg spectroscopy. Our high vacuum vapor cells use thin metal films for electrically addressing the atomic vapor. This allows us not only to apply DC and AC electric fields to the atoms, but also read-out the population of Rydberg atoms electrically by detecting the Rydberg ionization current. Furthermore the integration of graphene as transparent electrode material in such room temperature vapor cells is investigated and the possibility of spatial detection of microwave electric fields by Rydberg atoms is demonstrated.
