Buffet Control by Shock Control Bumps

Zusammenfassung / Abstract

As a method of transonic flow control, Shock Control Bumps (SCBs) have been a matter of research for almost three decades. While the potential of SCBs to reduce wave drag is by now more or less well analyzed and assessed, only little attention has been drawn so far to another field of application of SCBs - that is control of transonic shock buffet. This aerodynamic phenomenon describes a large-scale flow-induced motion of the shock wave that involves alternating separation and re-attachment of the boundary layer. It can excite structural motions and thereby compromise the structural integrity.

This thesis analyses and assesses the potential of 2D and 3D SCBs for control of transonic airfoil and wing buffet based on numerical flow simulations. The here applied (U)RANS scheme is validated on different experimental test cases. The effect of the SCB design condition is studied on a supercritical airfoil and a parametric variation of the most important bump design parameters highlights their sensitivity for buffet control. From these results, industrial applicable SCB design guidelines are derived. Applying these guidelines, different 2D and 3D SCBs are designed for the AVERT wing-body configuration and their control effectiveness on transonic wing buffet is analyzed.
