Jette Heyer
A high-resolution ion microscope and velocity-map-imaging spectrometer to probe ultracold quantum gases

166 Seiten, Dissertation Universität Hamburg (2026), Softcover, B5

Zusammenfassung / Abstract

Ultracold atoms and ultrashort laser pulses offer a unique window into the quantum world, combining exquisite control over matter with the ability to probe its dynamics on ultrafast timescales. This thesis presents the development and experimental characterization of a novel detection system for exploring these dynamics in an ultracold rubidium quantum gas. Combining high-resolution ion microscopy with velocity-map-imaging of photoelectrons, the system provides access to the spatial and momentum distributions of charged particles, while its high temporal resolution and detection efficiency enable the study of correlated dynamics through coincident detection. Its integration into the quantum gas experiment opens new possibilities for investigating excitation and ionization processes, atom-ion interactions, and correlated phenomena in few- and many-body quantum systems.
